Your fleet could be overpaying ETS by 6-9% per vessel every year

Fuel-based emission calculations systematically overestimate CO₂. That overestimation flows directly into your EU ETS carbon tax obligations and FuelEU penalty exposure. Revelle™ measures actual emissions in real time, correcting the data before it reaches your reporting systems.

Why fuel-based methods lead to higher compliance cost

  • Generic emission factors

The gap between assumed and actual emissions is driven by fuel that is estimated but not actually consumed.

  • All carbon becomes CO₂

Not all carbon becomes CO2, a share becomes CO, HC and methane slip, however fuel-based formulas count it all as CO2.

  • Sludge removal

Purification systems remove sludge from fuel prior to combustion. This sludge is recorded as consumed in tank monitoring and BDN records, but it is never burned.

  • Engine variability

BDN variances, tank sounding, and manual data entry each introduce small but compounding errors into the fuel consumption baseline that carry through the emission calculation.

The solution: direct measurement

  • Emissions sensors

A gas sample probe, gas conditioner, and gas analyser measure CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O directly from exhaust gases. Mass flow (kg/s) × gas intensity produces actual emission figures, not estimates derived from fuel.

  • Fuel sensors

Net main engine fuel consumption is measured via supply and return flow meters, capturing actual fuel burned rather than fuel purchased or loaded. This cross-checks the emission reading independently.

  • Engine load

Engine RPM data provides a third independent verification layer. Discrepancies between all three streams are flagged automatically, giving your compliance team a timestamped data quality score per voyage segment.

Impact

Revelle™ ensures you report and pay for only the emissions your vessels actually produce.

Correct ETS cost
EU ETS carbon allowances are surrendered based on reported CO₂. A 6-9% overstatement means 6-9% excess allowances surrendered at full market price. Revelle corrects the source data before it reaches your MRV report.

Correct FuelEU exposure
FuelEU penalties incorporate CH₄ and N₂O, gases that fuel-based methods estimate rather than measure. Revelle provides direct measurement of all three gases.

Fuel cost reduction
Engine load, fuel consumption, and emission data enables performance teams to identify efficiency losses per voyage, supporting engine tuning, voyage optimisation, and early fault detection before they become maintenance events.

Audit-ready data delivered into your systems

Compliance integration

Revelle™ does not require your team to change reporting platforms. The Reporting API delivers corrected emission figures, data quality scores, and calibration traceability directly into your existing EU MRV workflows.
