On board today's modern vessels, navigating officers are required to operate increasingly complex hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical equipment.

Thus, training in these subjects can reflect in better and more efficient handling of this equipment on board. Besides, basic working knowledge of engine room auxiliaries helps in better understanding and more cooperation between departments on board. 

Course Objective:

  • To clear the concepts of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical technology.
  • To provide the participant with a better understanding of engineering aspects of deck operations / machinery.
  • To develop an insight into various engine room operations / machinery thereby enhancing judgment and decision making capability in critical situations.
  • To foster learning through sharing of experiences amongst participants.

Suggested Target Group: All Operational and Management level Deck Officers

Course Contents:

  • Hydraulics: Fundamental concepts, importance of clean oil, reservoirs and filters, important component working and symbols, safety and watchkeeping on hydraulic systems, reading and understanding deck related hydraulic circuits viz. ramp, cargo / ballast valve operation, hatch covers, provision cranes, winches / windlass, steering etc.
  • Pneumatics: Basic principles, importance of clean & dry air, the FRL unit, working and care of pneumatic equipment viz. remote ullaging, Wilden pump, air motors etc.
  • Main Propulsion: Main engine operational aspects, implications of crash astern, repeated starts, long slow speed running, turbocharger surging / washing, funnel sparking etc. Safety issues - crankcase explosion, air starting line explosion, scavenge fire.
  • Aux. Equipment: Deck department related aspects of:
    - Pumps - (positive displacement and centrifugal), characteristic curves, parallel operation
    - Boilers - operational aspects, effects of sudden steam demand, importance of 
      waterwashing etc.
    - Operational aspects of fresh water generators, waste handling systems, heat exchangers,
      air compressors, refrigeration and air-conditioning units etc.
