Maintaining high-quality water onboard is essential for crew health, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. CHEMROAD HOPE recently faced persistent issues with corrosion in its drinking and freshwater systems— until Wilhelmsen Ships Service provided a targeted and effective solution.

The challenge

The vessel’s crew had long struggled with deteriorating water quality caused by corrosion in the pipeline infrastructure. This not only affected the taste and safety of drinking water but also led to increased maintenance costs and operational inefficiencies.

At the same time, the vessel must comply with evolving environmental regulations—particularly around single-use plastic waste management. With global maritime authorities tightening restrictions, ports in several regions now enforce strict rules on the use, storage, and discharge of plastics. These include:

  • Prohibitions on discharging certain single-use plastic items to port reception facilities
  • Requirements to securely store such items while in territorial waters
  • Obligations to log and report the presence of these items onboard

These changes will add complexity to daily operations, making it essential for the crew to adopt more sustainable practices and ensure full regulatory compliance.

The solution

Wilhelmsen Ships Service provided a tailored installation of its Corrosion Shield technologytogether with IINO MARINE SERVICE CO LTD., designed specifically for maritime drinking and freshwater systems.

The project was supported by:

  • Detailed pipeline drawings
  • A comprehensive technical report
  • Expert guidance from Wilhelmsen’s water treatment specialists

This ensured a smooth and compliant installation process, with minimal disruption to operations.

The results

Significant improvement in water quality

Post-installation testing showed a significant boost in water clarity, taste, and safety. Crew members immediately noticed the difference, reporting a more pleasant and reliable water supply.

Reduced maintenance and downtime

The corrosion shield has effectively minimised internal pipeline wear, extended the lifespan of the vessel’s water systems and reducing the frequency of repairs.

Regulatory confidence

With Wilhelmsen’s proven technology and documentation, the vessel now meets stringent water safety standards, ensuring peace of mind for both crew and operators.

Crew testimonial
