Modern vessels equipped with sophisticated machinery and new technologies need careful handling during operations and maintenance. It has been realized that there is growing need for developing and honing the skills of Marine Engineers to understand the working, maintenance and troubleshooting of the various automated control equipments.

This course is designed to prepare the Marine Engineer to face the challenges of modern vessels in Automation and Control. It addresses the earlier, but still widely prevalent, pneumatic automation devices as well as the more modern Programmable Logic Controller.

This course provides a forum for theory lecture delivery, computer simulation exercises, hands on training on the pneumatic components as well as on the PLC and group discussions leading to improvement in competency and confidence in handling automation equipment.

Course Objective:

On completion of this course, the participant should be able to understand:

  • Concepts of automatic control.
  • Working and maintenance of Temperature, Pressure, Flow, Level and other measuring equipment.
  • Operation and maintenance of various types of Transmitters, Controllers, Actuators, Valve Positioners and control valves with their characteristics.
  • Boilers controllers-Boiler water level controller and Air/Fuel combustion controller.
  • Operation and maintenance of the Automatic Controller along with calibration.
  • The operation and maintenance aspects of the Programmable Logic Controller.

  • Instrumentation: Temperature measurement, Pressure measurement, Level measurement, Flow measurement and other measuring instruments.
  • Pneumatic Transmitter, Pneumatic Controller, Methods of determining the controller settings, Malfunction and Trouble-shooting of controllers.
  • Simulation exercises on PID controllers showing the effect of setting variations and methods of determining controller settings.
  • Yamatake-Honeywell controller- components, operation, maintenance and calibration.
  • Factors influencing control action & Tuning of P-I-D controllers.
  • Boiler water level Controller- Single element, Two element and Three element.
  • Boiler Combustion Control.
  • Programmable logic controller, detailed study of the Architecture of the PLC and the memory organization in PLC.
  • Understanding the input/output section of PLC.
  • Electrical diagram, wiring diagram and Ladder diagram and their conversion.
  • Understanding the configuration of the Mitsubishi Programmable controller.
