Steering Test

Steering capability assessment of the seafarer is carried out on a full mission bridge simulator on a vessel model as per the client’s requirements. IMTC has ship models of Bulk carrier / Tanker / PCC / LPG / LNG / Container of different sizes.

The actual test is done initially in open seas where the participant is judged on following:

  • Understanding steering orders.
  • Controlling the vessel’s headings.
  • Controlling the heading under different helm orders/ scenarios.
  • Steering the vessel in a buoyed channel with current.
  • Identifying fault while steering and reporting same to the OOW.

Further few theoretical questions on Handing over, Steering lights, keeping Lookout and reporting to OOW are asked by assessor.    

Duration:   The schedule is based on mutual convenience as the assessment is based on only one participant which generally takes about 2.5 hours.  

Target Group: AB (Able Bodied Seamen) & Promotable OS (Ordinary Seamen)

Prior notice, as early as possible is preferred, so that IMTC can arrange a schedule based on availability of faculty & simulator.
