Ocean Talent Programme

Welcome to the Ocean Talent Programme, a pilot initiative by Wilhelmsen to inspire and support young academic talents from low-income families in Malaysia. Our mission is to provide educational opportunities and foster a connection to the maritime industry through comprehensive support and mentorship. By funding entire degrees and nurturing student relationships through local ambassador programmes at our offices, we aim to build a brighter future for both the students and the maritime industry.

Eligibility 

To apply for the Ocean Talent Programme, you must meet the following criteria: 

Nationality: Malaysian citizens aged 25 years old and below. 

Academic qualification: Existing TAR UMT Foundation/Diploma/ bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0000 or equivalent. New degree student with STPM/ A-Level/ UEC with minimum 1A’s. 

Financial background: Financially needy with a total monthly income of parents/ guardians of RM5,000 and below. Applicant must not presently receive any sponsorship from other organisations or institutions. 

Language proficiency: Good command of English, both verbal and written. 

Interest: Aspire to pursue a career in the maritime industry. 

 

Value of sponsorship 

  • University fees as per student bill for the duration of the programme (excluding fees for dual award/professional programmes, special projects, field trips, external accreditation, learning materials, study abroad, or re-sit/repeat of subjects). 
  • Monthly living allowance of RM1,200 for the duration of the programme.

Q&A  

Q: What is the Ocean Talent Programme?  

A: The Ocean Talent Programme is a pilot project by Wilhelmsen aimed at supporting two young students from low-income families in Malaysia through their bachelor’s degrees. The goal is to inspire young academic talents to pursue careers in the maritime industry by providing full financial support and mentorship  

 

Q: Who can apply for the Ocean Talent Programme?  

A: The programme is open to young students from low-income families in Malaysia who have been accepted into TAR UMT university. Applicants must demonstrate both financial need and academic potential. Students are not required to study maritime industry-specific subjects; we are interested in all academic programmes.  

 

Q: What does the financial support cover?  

A: The financial support covers tuition fees, living expenses, and other case-by-case costs for the entire duration of the bachelor’s degree. 

 

Q: How does the mentorship programme work?  

A: The two students will be paired with mentors from Wilhelmsen who will provide guidance and support throughout their academic journey and introductions to the maritime industry. This includes regular check-ins, coaching, and site visits. 

 

Q: What are the key dates for the application process?  

A: The application process will open soon, with the first semester starting in July 2025. Applicants should ensure they meet all criteria and submit their applications before the deadline. 

 

Q: How are candidates selected?  

A: Candidates are selected based on their financial need, academic potential, and enthusiasm for pursuing a university degree. The selection process includes an application review, interviews, and assessments conducted by Wilhelmsen and TAR UMT university. 

 

Q: What happens if a student does not meet the academic requirements during the programme?  

A: Students are required to maintain a certain CGPA each quarter to continue receiving support. Regular reviews and assessments will be conducted to ensure students stay on track. Additional support and guidance will be provided to help students meet the requirements. 

 

Q: Will the students be bonded with Wilhelmsen upon graduation? 

A: Yes, the students will be bonded with Wilhelmsen – one year for every year of study 

 

Q: Can I appeal if I am not shortlisted? 

A: All decisions of the selection committee will be considered final.
