Motor starters are located close to the motor for the individual system, e.g. the pump. When it is time to select the motor starter, Wilhelmsen Marine Engineering offers a choice between different types:

• DOL is a direct starter for applications where energy is not a scarce resource
• Y/D is used primarily when a start needs to be carried out at a low energy consumption
• Soft starter ramps up slowly to the full working speed of the motor
• Frequency converters are used to control the starting speed of the motor or equipment
  
  

Transformer starter is used primarily for larger motors, e.g. for thrusters.
