Thermal photography

Wilhelmsen Marine Engineering offers its customers worldwide to carry out thermography analysis of equipment as part of their regular preventive maintenance or for specific location of defects in an electrical system.

When a company invests in preventive maintenance, it also makes a significant investment in optimum operating safety. From experience we know that systematic inspections of equipment and installations are often much more economical than repairs of unforeseen defects. Expensive shutdowns are avoided and possible safety risks are minimised as much as possible.

Thermography is measuring by means of thermal radiation. The camera works in the same way as a video camera, but it only sees infrared light indicating heat.

Typical fields of application for thermography are:

  • Main switchboards / distribution switchboards
  • Other electrical switchboards
  • Low and high-voltage installations
  • Electrical installations
  • Motors and generators

The above list is not comprehensive, as thermography can be used for almost any equipment where a difference of temperature can be measured.

Modern Equipment and Documentation
Wilhelmsen Marine Engineering uses the following equipment for thermography:

  • Still video camera
  • AVIO Handy Thermo

This equipment is some of the most advanced available on the market. The equipment makes it possible to store images in digital form that are used for the comprehensive documentation of results. Our documentation consists of an extensive report including pictures, thermograms, information about loads and temperatures, together with comments on the condition of the equipment and proposed improvement.
