Without robust control, the rather intricate thermodynamic processes that go on in the plant will play havoc with the system and cause excessive energy consumption, added wear and tear on the equipment and poor atmosphere on board. This is not always easy for the crew to detect unless the control system has a smart and intuitive monitoring system.

Consider for instance that for the most part of its life cycle, a HVAC plant on any ship will run at half its capacity. If the control system fails to match actual demand on the different subsystems – huge amounts of expensive and polluting fuel go up in smoke because the plant runs full blast with its brakes on at the same time.
