Pressure switches

PRESSURE SWITCHES

Pressure switches are an essential component in any refrigeration system, large or small.  They provide the safety element and assist in shutting down the compressor when the working pressures deviate from a set value.

There are 4 types of pressure switches
Low pressure switches – they stop the compressor if the suction pressure drops below a set value.  This prevents the system running in vacuum condition, which could pull in air and moisture if there is a leak.  They usually reset automatically once the pressure in the suction side increases beyond a set value

High pressure switches – they stop the compressor if the discharge pressure increases beyond a set value.  This prevents damage to the compressor and other system components and also stops safety valves from blowing, releasing refrigerants that harm the environment.  They normally have to be manually reset

Dual pressure switches – combination of low and high pressure controls in one switch.  The high pressure side is usually reset manually

Oil differential pressure switches – they prevent damage to compressors due to low oil pressure.  There is a time delay at start-up to allow the pressure to build up.  The switch usually has to be manually reset.
