Thermostatic expansion valves (TEV) come in 3 types
Internal equalising
External equalising
Electronic controlled
They maintain the superheat at the evaporator outlet and prevent liquid refrigerant flooding back to the compressor and damaging it.

TEVs come in various sizes and with different connection types, flare or soldered
