Stamco Ship Management is the latest company to buy into the Wilhelmsen Ships Service life raft rental program. Stamco will rent liferafts on an annual basis from Wilhelmsen Ships Service for 42 existing car carriers, and has signed an agreement to supply liferafts to approximately 30 more vessels being built between now and 2012.
Under the agreement, Wilhelmsen Ships Service undertakes to rent liferafts to the Stamco vessels on an annual basis. At the end of each year, they will be exchanged for newly-certified liferafts in one of the agreed exchange ports around the world.
For Stamco, this means predictability of supply and costs, quicker turnaround time in port, and ease of compliance with the IMO regulations.
“This is a significant improvement in the way we handle liferaft service,” said Mr Costas Tournis, Stamco’s Managing Director. “For a relatively large fleet of car-carrier vessels like ours, with short stays in ports, monitoring the liferaft service schedule was a major headache. Trying to coordinate our port calls with the supplier’s service centre and replacing damaged liferafts is something we don’t have to worry about in future.”
The Liferafts are backed by a service network of more than 20 service stations. Wilhelmsen Ships Service covers many of the major ports, and is continuously developing new service stations either by using in-house stations or through subcontractors.
Wilhelmsen Ships Service recently signed an agreement with Survitec (manufacturer of brands such as RFD, Beaufort, DSB, Crewsaver, EV and Elliot) to produce their Unitor-branded liferaft, which will be used for the life raft rental agreements.
“Our partnership with the Survitec brands RFD and DSB is a logical step in our strategy to become the shaper of the maritime service industry through our strong brand names. This partnership will further enable us to improve our customer’s operational efficiency,” says Andrew Sheriff, Business Director Technical Services, Wilhelmsen Ships Service.
