Wilhelmsen Ships Service Maritime Logistics in Egypt have introduced a new service to notify their customers by SMS message as soon as a shipment arrives in port. Previously it was common practice to advise clients by fax or telephone, but in addition, customers can now appoint a designated recipient who will be notified of the arrival of a cargo.
This new service uses sophisticated software to ensure that notifications are received by the real consignees in addition to the notifying party. It also improves the cargo delivery period and the overall overdue cost for the line. This service began with vessels arriving in Port Said, but will soon be extended to the Port of Alexandria, and other ports in Egypt.
In 2008, Wilhelmsen Ships Service handled 63,000 TEUs (36,000 import and 27,000 export) and 62,000 transhipment containers. This handling includes all documentation services for import and export cargo, vessel’s berthing, discharge and loading operations preplanning in co-operation with the container terminals, and delivery of containers to the final destination through our transportation desk. The automatic SMS notification promises to streamline this operation still futher.
