The handbook is available for all users of the renowned Unitor range of welding tools and consumables, and it is also the basis for welding training and education at all maritime academies and training centres that use Wilhelmsen Ships Service approved training courses as a basis for the welding education.
The welding handbook has come to be seen by ships engineers and technicians throughout the shipping industry as the definitive manual for welding on board ship. It is a useful guide both for inexperienced welders and skilled veterans.
Jarle Stein Jensen is the editor of this book. “The welding handbook deals with welding and related processes in a maritime environment, which is different in many respects from welding on land. Most land-based welding is production welding, in pre-defined conditions, using new materials,” said Jarle. “On board vessels, much of the welding is connected with repair and maintenance. Very often this is in inaccessible parts of the vessel, and the job will require welding in an awkward position. Furthermore, the level of moisture is generally much higher than it would be on land, which can have serious implications for the quality of the weld, and the effectiveness of the equipment.”
The welding handbook takes a very serious view of safety, both in the general precautions needed for hot work on board, handling welding gases, and in safe use of the arc welding processes. Ship-board welders are almost always standing on the material that they are welding, which adds extra danger to the arc welding operations.
There are separate sections in the handbook dealing in detail with arc and gas welding and cutting processes and equipment. In addition, there is a comprehensive section on identifying metals and evaluating welds. The handbook also functions as an effective catalogue of consumables, with a detailed description of how these are used in a maritime environment. This part also includes a comprehensive section on polymer-based cold repair products and applications. These applications add to welding solutions and are also complimentary to welding solutions where heat should be avoided.
The welding handbook is free to all Wilhelmsen Ships Service customers, or purchasers of Unitor welding equipment and consumables. Contact your nearest Wilhelmsen Ships Service Customer Service Centre if you would like to receive an updated copy.
