WSM together with other prominent players in the lay up business had a 2-day forum in Singapore recently. This forum focussed on the strategic option and procedures for laying up vessels. Ship lay up forum is something new to the industry therefore during the panel discussion session, many questions were raised such as:
- how to assess the various lay up options ? which lay up service provider can customize the solution to fit owners' strategy?
- will the vessel be in good maintenance state during lay up?
- what about the lay up planning? Pre lay up procedures and lay up procedures
- where is safe lay up anchorages? is it costs effective and well taken care of?
- what services are offered for re-activation?
With the downturn of trade and shipping markets, containerships, car carriers, LPG/LNG and even tankers are forced to lay up. With market conditions remain uncertain, vessel owners must consider various commercial factors such as if vessel should be put into hot or cold lay up, modified or recycled?
WSM together with WSS set up Wilhelmsen Asset Care (WAC) in Labuan, East Malaysia to provide ship owners with full range of services for lay up of ships.
Our lay up service in Labuan is the first and only in the industry comply with DNV Guideline for lay up of ship. A statement of compliance was issued to WSM this year.
We have full experience in handling ship owners assets. Within a short span of 12 months, WAC had laid up 33 vessels and re-activated 6.
