Strategic port management for senior management

Ports have a key role in facilitating trade, playing a critical interface between marine and land based transportation. They are part of international supply chain networks, the effectiveness of which drives trade competitiveness.

Ports have a key role in facilitating trade, playing a critical interface between marine and land based transportation. They are part of international supply chain networks, the effectiveness of which drives trade competitiveness.

  • There are more than 2000 ports around the world, from small ports handling a few hundred tons a year to multi purpose facilities handling up to 300 million tons a year.
  • Total world port traffic is around 12 billion tons. While the overall traffic has been steady, world container port traffic has been expanding at 12-15% per annum during the recent years. In 2003, the figure had crossed 300 million TEUs.
  • World port traffic is made of liquid bulk (45%), dry bulk (23%) and general cargo including containers (32%).

Developing countries are the major engines for port development today, fuelled by their high economic growth rates.

  • More than 80% of trade with origins or destinations in developing countries, in tonnage, is through seas.
  • World total freight payment as a proportion of total import value is about 6%. This figure was about 5% for developed countries and 9% for developing countries, reflecting the relative efficiencies in the logistics chain.

The port scenario in India is potentially on a high growth track, playing a significant role in the economic development of the country.

  • India is facing galloping growth in international trade (20 to 25% annual growth over the past three years). 95% of India’s trade by volume and 77% by value move through Indian ports.
  • There are 12 major port administrations. There are over 180 minor and intermediate ports. In 2004-05, Indian ports handled about 511 mt of traffic (384 mt at major ports and 127 mt. at minor/intermediate ports).
  • Ports have major bottlenecks, resulting in a 12% freight payment as a proportion of total import value. Significant efforts are on to develop infrastructure and services at ports, including through privatization.

Given the above and in the context of:

  • Specific needs of multimodal transport and effective supply chains and
  • Privatization of ports and the increased involvement of private players in port activities, there is a need to evolve strategic perspectives for ports driven by strategic thinking among the senior management, for which a management development programme could be one of the essential vehicles

Programme Objectives:

To provide the participants:

  • To enhance strategic decision-making skills through analysis and integrated perspectives
  • To understand core general management concepts as applicable to the ports sector

Target Group:

Senior management (functional heads) and prospective senior managers from the ports, shipping, and related logistics services within the maritime sector globally. Apart from the fact that the programme addresses fundamental strategic concerns of ports anywhere in the world, it would be of added value to international participants since there is interest in India as a growing port, logistics, and trade market.

The programme is supported by the Indian Ports Association for participation from the major ports of India.
