- Hydraulics: Fundamental concepts, importance of clean oil, reservoirs and filters, important component working and symbols, safety and watchkeeping on hydraulic systems, reading and understanding deck related hydraulic circuits viz. ramp, cargo / ballast valve operation, hatch covers, provision cranes, winches / windlass, steering etc.
- Pneumatics: Basic principles, importance of clean & dry air, the FRL unit, working and care of pneumatic equipment viz. remote ullaging, Wilden pump, air motors etc.
- Main Propulsion: Main engine operational aspects, implications of crash astern, repeated starts, long slow speed running, turbocharger surging / washing, funnel sparking etc. Safety issues - crankcase explosion, air starting line explosion, scavenge fire.
- Aux. Equipment: Deck department related aspects of:
- Pumps - (positive displacement and centrifugal), characteristic curves, parallel operation
- Boilers - operational aspects, effects of sudden steam demand, importance of
- Operational aspects of fresh water generators, waste handling systems, heat exchangers,
