Marine engineering 1 - management level 

The 'MEML' engine room simulator course is a PC based course done on the PPT 2000 (Propulsion Plant Trainer) developed by Norcontrol, Norway.
 

The software and hardware used herein (a specialized keyboard which is also used in the full mission simulator) has also been developed by Norcontrol.

This programme essentially covers all aspects of engine room operations, simulating the working of all engine room machinery and sub-systems and includes 3 different models of Main Engine viz. B&W, Sulzer and Pielstick. The course is developed with reference to STCW -Section A Table A-III/2.

All E/R systems and equipment can be started / operated with the consequent effects on relevant parameters clearly identifiable.

Theory lectures on operational procedures are followed up by practical exercises on the simulator for safe and efficient startup / operation of auxiliary and main machinery, electrical generation and distribution systems, steam plant turbo-alternator and shaft generator / motor.

Course Objective:

On completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • make a safer and more effective contribution to the operation and control of the vessel's machinery installation.
  • analyze engine operational data and evaluate engine performance.
  • identify operational problems and troubleshoot them.
  • appreciate the need for detailed pre-planning prior carrying out important operations.
  • learn through sharing of experiences amongst participants.

Course Contents:

  • Familiarisation with the Norcontrol simulator and the Engine room with all the associated automation panels such as Power Chief (Generator Control), Auto Chief (M/E control) and Data Chief etc. 
  • Familiarisation with all the associated Engine room sub systems.
  • Explanation of power generation and pump control through the Power Chief and the various automatic load sharing programs controlled by the Power Chief -demonstration of the above on the simulator.
  • Starting up procedure of the various auxiliaries viz. the diesel generators, the boiler and steam plant, turbo alternator and other aux. machinery.
  • A CD-ROM presentation of the Auto Chief 4 -developed by Seagull, Norway.
  • Getting the Main engine ready and running -description of the Auto Chief control for the Main Engine -the speed setting signal flow from fuel lever to governor and the various inbuilt load / speed limiting programs, viz. torque limit, thermal index, scavenge air pressure, critical rpm and, their settings and the various Slow Down / Shut Down safety parameters and their set points. Monitoring the various parameters on the Data Chief.
  • Description of the shaft generator, operation and working -starting up the Shaft generator. Familiarisation of the 'Power Take Off' and 'Power Take In' modes and the settings available in the PTI mode- demonstration of the above on the simulator.
  • 'Scenarios' -which comprise of the injection of malfunctions at pre-determined intervals into the Engine rooms and participant response / action evaluated and discussed on completion of the scenario.
  • Study of the indicator cards at times of cylinder malfunction -injection of faults such as early / late timing of fuel injection and many other cylinder malfunctions and calculation of extra fuel consumption in these cases.
  • Explanation of Hydraulic governor working, settings and effect of droop settings on the same -demonstration of the above on the load sharing characteristics of the alternators on the simulator.
Explanation of the basic principles of a controller, the P (proportional), I (integral) and d (derivative) settings and tuning of a controller using the Ziegler-Nichols method -demonstration of the same on the simulator.
