High voltage safety course

Modern Technology has enabled the construction of bigger ships and installations, and their designers have installed high-voltage equipment to handle the massive power requirements.
Operators of such equipment require to be well trained in all aspects of High-Voltage Safety.

For the first time in the Indian sub-continent, customized training is now available to the Maritime sector. Designed and developed by IMTC, the “High-Voltage Safety Course” offers invaluable benefits to Marine Engineers and Electrical Officers.

The Course familiarizes the participants with High-Voltage equipment and the various safety procedures for handling the same. A 1-day field trip exposes the participants to the actual operations and maintenance procedures of High-Voltage switchgear at a High-Voltage installation.

Course Objectives:

To enable the Participants to :

  • Understand the working of the various specialized components & equipment used in high - voltage installations.
  • Operate, maintain & troubleshoot High Voltage installations safely & efficiently.
  • Learn through sharing of experience amongst participants.

Duration: 3 days

Suggested Target Group:

All Electrical Officers & Marine Engineers.

Course Contents:

  • Introduction
  • High Voltage on board - Theory • Description of High Voltage generators
  • Stator and rotor construction.
  • Layout of high voltage electrical system on board.
  • Earthing and isolating arrangements on the main busbar.
  • Separation of high & low voltage distribution system.
  • High Voltage measuring instruments and safety precautions.
  • Tracing Shipboard Electrical circuit diagrams of high voltage equipment.
  • Risks and hazards from High Voltage (3.3 KV - 6.6 KV) - Theory • Accidental contacts with high voltage generated due to Inter electrode capacitances present in high voltage systems.
  • Stored energy in high voltage inductances due to residual magnetism.
  • Arcing, sparks and explosions due to moisture, low insulation, loose connections, etc.
  • Introduction to High Voltage switchgear - Theory & Practicals • Vacuum circuit breakers.
  • Isolating & withdrawal procedures of circuit breakers for repairs and replacements.
  • Arrangement of key operated interlocks & the importance of correct sequence of operation.
  • Sulpha Hexa Floride circuit breakers (S.F.6)
  • Protection in VCB, in case of High Voltage / Earth fault / Low Insulation.
  • Field Visit to High Voltage Installation

A visit would be arranged to a High Voltage Installation where the participant would be exposed to the control systems of high voltage equipment. Practical demonstration of withdrawing / replacing the breakers, Current Transformers and Potential (Voltage) Transformers.
