Wet pipe and deluge systems
The Unitor XFlow® wet pipe system is designed to protect enclosed ro-ro spaces and special category spaces against fires. The Unitor XFlow® deluge system is developed for protection of small open ended and closed ro-ro and special category spaces.
Both systems have prescriptive system design and meet the latest IMO MSC.1/Circ.1430 regulation, providing improved fire protection for ro-ro and ro-pax vessels.
- Reliable system with large bore nozzles that reduce the risk of clogging
- The systems use seawater and do not require extra fresh water supply during operation
- To avoid corrosion and clean up after testing, the systems are connected to a fresh water supply
- Standard tool- and spare part kits are available for commissioning and service to ensure efficient operations
- Documentation for easy planning and design of the ro-ro space
- Low pressure system using low pressure components and piping cost saving easy installation
A cost effective solution
Designed for optimal system performance, keeping both installation and operational costs low
- Standardised product range reduce delivery time
- Minimal and easy maintenance keeps operational costs low
The wet pipe and deluge systems can be combined with XFlow® water mist systems for machinery spaces, local application fire fi ghting and accommodation.
Where can the systems be used?
The Unitor XFlow wet pipe and deluge are designed to protect ro-ro and ro-pax vessels againts fires.
Open ro-ro spaces are those ro-ro spaces that are either open at both ends or have an opening at one end
Closed ro-ro spaces are ro-ro spaces which are neither open ro-ro spaces nor weather decks
Special category spaces are those enclosed vehicle spaces, into and from which vehicles can be driven and to which passengers have access.
System design and configuration
The Unitor XFlow® wet pipe system with automatic sprinklers is designed for closed ro-ro spaces and special category spaces. The nozzles are fitted with a glass bulb, and are attached to a pressurized piping system, connected to water pumps. In case of a fire, the glass bulb will be heated, and the liquid absorbed the air bubble will expand until it breaks the glass, and water will flow from the nozzle.
The volume and composition of the liquid and the size of the air bubble determine the temperature at which the head activates as well as the speed with which it responds. In line with regulations, the wet pipe system is designed for covering minimum 280 m² of the area which is the highest or farthest away from the pump, based on water discharge density as defined for the various deck heights.
The Unitor XFlow® deluge system is a dry pipe system primarily designed to protect open ro-ro spaces, using open nozzles attached to a piping system connected to water pumps. The protected space is divided into sections, each with a section valve located outside of the protected area. In case of fire in a section, the section valve is opened, and water will flow from all nozzles in that section.
In line with regulations, the deluge system is designed for simultaneous activation of two adjacent deluge sections that are highest or farthest away from the pump, based on water discharge density as defined for the various deck heights. The systems can be installed independently or in combination. However, the systems cannot be combined in the same protected space.
Wet pipe system – the system for closed ro-ro spaces
Deluge system with manual control section valves – the system designed for small ro-ro spaces, preferably 1 or 2 sections on single horizontal deck
Deluge system with remote control section valves - the system designed for ro-ro spaces with multi section design. Optionally, section valves can be controlled by fixed fire detection system. Such system become automatic deluge system.
Deluge system with foam additives - the fire fighting properties of the deluge system can be considerable *enhanced with the introduction of foam solution into the systems water supply (weather deck application)
Deluge system combined with automatic wet pipe – the system for ships that consist of open ro-ro spaces as well as closed ro-ro spaces, is cost beneficial especially if area of two adjacent open ro-ro spaces is equal or less than 430 m2
Extinguishing fire using water
The Unitor XFlow water mist system creates a mist of fine water droplets. Droplets in variable sizes circulate in the airflow, suppressing the supply of oxygen and absorbing the heat energy, and thereby breaking the chain of combustion.
Water is an effective agent for fire fighting as it is readily available and environmentally friendly. When water is added as mist it is most efficient at reducing and dissipating heat and thereby controlling, suppressing and extinguishing a fire.
Rules and regulations
Accoring the new IMO MSC.1/Circ.1430 regulation, all ro-ro and ro-pax vessels shall have a fixed fire fighting system for ro-ro spaces and special category spaces. The systems shall suppress fires on open ended decks and in enclosed spaces where vehicles and passengers have access.
The new regulations were introduced after several accidents with RoRo fires. Investigations into existing requirements for water based systems, done by SP, proved that existing coverage according to IMO resolution A.123, a drencher system with 5 lpm/m² was not sufficient. As a consequence, the new MSC.1/Circ.1430 regulation reflecting the requirements for prescriptive and performance based systems from the SP tests was adopted.
