Towards its 100 years anniversary in 2014 the Norwegian Maritime Museum will undergo an extensive and ambitious upgrading. This work started in 2010.
The Norwegian maritime cluster is supporting the museum in this important work through NMM Partners. This is a partnership group consisting of 40 companies and organisations in the industry, including the Wilh. Wilhelmsen group.
The Wilh. Wilhelmsen group is a proud supporter of the museum and has among other provided ship models to the museum’s various exhibitions.
About the museum
The Norwegian Maritime Museum is situated on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo, overlooking the Oslo Fjord.
The museum’s collections include photos, plans, vessels, ship models, navigational tools and ships equipment. The museum’s galleries showcase traditional open boats illustrating the influence of shipbuilding traditions from the Viking and medieval eras well into the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum also plays a vital role in the management of Norwegian maritime heritage through the documentation and rescue of underwater cultural heritage sites in the most populous areas of the country. For example, no less than 13 boats were excavated in the downtown area of Oslo during 2008 and 2009. The finds are currently being presented in a temporary exhibition.
Information about the museum, its activities, opening hours and how to get there can be found on their website, see link under related information.
