The ships will be sisters of the six state of the art Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) WW has already ordered at Nagasaki, of which three have been delivered.
This contract marks the continuation of the successful relationship between WW and MHI. The PCTCs WW builds at the MHI yard in Nagasaki are a new generation of PCTCs. They are particularly efficient with regards to cargo capacity, cargo handling and fuel consumption.
“WW has a constant need for new tonnage in the years to come. We are very pleased to continue this partnership with MHI,” says Ingar Skaug, WW group chief executive officer. "The ships are especially well suited for the cargo-mix our operating companies cater for."
Facts
WW has a new-building programme for six PCTCs at the MHI yard in Nagasaki, Japan. The vessels each have a cargo capacity of 6 550 cars. With this agreement, the programme is extended to eight ships. The vessels will be deployed in the Wallenius Wilhelmsen fleet.
Three of the vessels have been delivered, MV Torrens, MV Toledo and MV Toronto (see image above). The other vessels in the programme are to be delivered in 2006 (2), 2007 (1) and 2008 (2).
The MV Torrens received a prize earlier this year for “a highly optimised PCTC design combining a novel arrangement of the double bottom, fuel tanks and solid ballast with a cargo space which maximises the cargo capacity and flexibility to carry a wide variety of ro-ro cargo” (see link to article below).
