Two more sister vessels to MV Torrens

Two more car carriers from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

07.06.2006 (WW )
Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) have agreed to build two further pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) at Japan’s Nagasaki yard for delivery in 2009.

Each of these newbuildings will have a capacity of 6 550 cars and are sister ships of the five latest PCTCs currently on order for WW at MHI. Three similar vessels have already been delivered.

“To maintain our market position and secure our share of new markets, we must have sufficient tonnage,” says group chief executive Ingar Skaug at WW.

“We also expect to expand our collaboration with MHI to embrace development of a new design for tomorrow’s car carriers featuring greater cargo capacity and more efficient operation.”

The WW group and its partners have an extensive newbuilding programme, embracing 44 new car carriers for delivery in 2006-09. WW accounts for 12 of these vessels.
