Ports have a key role in facilitating trade, playing a critical interface between marine and land based transportation. They are part of international supply chain networks, the effectiveness of which drives trade competitiveness.

  • There are more than 2000 ports around the world, from small ports handling a few hundreds tons a year to large multi purpose faculties handling more than 450 million tons a year.
  • Total world port traffic in 2006 was around 14.8 billion tons. While the overall traffic has been growing at 4 to 6% per annum, world container port traffic has been expanding at 10 - 12% per annum during the recent years. In 2007, the figure had crossed 484 million TEUs.
  • World port traffic is made of liquid bulk (45%), dry bulk (23%) and general cargo including containers (32%).
  • Developing countries are the major engines for port development today, fuelled by their high economic growth rates.
  • More than 80% of trade with origins or destinations in developing countries, in tonnage, is through seas.
  • In 2005, world total freight payment as a proportion of total import value was about 5.9%. This figure was about 4.8% for developed countries and 7.7% for developing countries, reflecting the relative efficiencies in the logistics chain.

The port scenario in India is potentially on a high growth track, playing a significant role in the economic development of the country.

  • India is facing galloping growth in international trade (20 to 25% annual growth over the past three years). 95% of India's trade by volume and 77% by value move through Indian ports.
  • There are 12 major port administrations. There are over 187 non-major ports. In 2009-10, Indian ports handled about 800mt of traffic (531 mt at major ports and 202 mt at non-major ports).

    Ports have major bottlenecks, resulting in a 12% freight payment as a proportion of total import value. Significant efforts are on to develop infrastructure and services at ports, including through privatization.

Given the above and in the context of;

  • specific needs of multimodal transport and effective supply chains and
  • privatization of ports and the increased involvement of private players in port activities

There is a need to evolve strategic perspectives for ports driven by strategic thinking among the senior management, for which a management development programme could be one of the essential vehicles.

DELIVERY

The programme will be offered as a joint activity between Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) and International Maritime Training Centre (IMTC), Mumbai. IIMA is among the top management schools in Asia, with a strong research base of infrastructure development including ports. IMTC is a fully owned subsidiary of Wilhelmsen Maritime Services, a leading global provider of services to the maritime industry. IMTC has a rich experience of training maritime personnel ashore and afloat and brings a global orientation to the training. Jointly, the two institutions have been involved in the successful delivery of the one-week General Management for Shipping Programme, which has been offered eleven times in the past six years.

VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION

Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre (KLMDC), IIMA main Campus, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad.
Participants will be provided furnished, air-conditioned accommodation on single occupancy basis at KLMDC.

FEE

Rs. 80,000 per participant from India and SAARC countries including India (US$ 2,500 for participants from non-SAARC countries). The fee is payable in advance. It covers programme sessions, teaching material, computer time, room and board expenses.

Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre (KLMDC) located on the main campus, and International Management Development Centre (IMDC) located on the new campus, provide an academic and learning environment for participants of the Management Development Programmes. All rooms are air-conditioned and have internet connectivity. There are separate dining halls, a reading lounge, classrooms, an auditorium (with audio-visual and computer projection facilities), syndicate rooms, and a computer lab with LAN and internet connectivity. Recreation facilities exist for indoor and outdoor games (badminton, TT, carrom, chess, volleyball, and cricket). Participants can also take advantage of the Institute's library.
